Exploring student experience at Savanta’s HE Insight Club event

In the competitive landscape of higher education, attracting and retaining students is a top priority for marketing and recruitment professionals. But have you ever stopped to consider the pivotal role that student experience plays in this process? At Savanta, we think it’s time to shine a spotlight on this muti-faceted factor that can help or hinder student recruitment efforts.

Our upcoming HE Insight Club Event – exclusive to higher education marketing and recruitment professionals from UK universities – is dedicated to exploring and understanding student experience.

Why is student experience the focus of our HE Insight Club Event?

Savanta’s HE Success Suite of insight subscription products consistently tells us that at undergraduate level, course provision and employability are the top drivers of university choice. This will come as no surprise to higher education marketing and recruitment professionals – a student’s passion for their chosen course fuels their learning from Fresher’s week through to graduation, while the skills and employability they gain throughout their qualification will give them tangible return on investment and opens pathways after graduation. As a result, our work has always put a lot of focus on these factors.

But student experience goes beyond course and employability. Perceptions of student experience start to develop during the decision-making process before a student has even started at university. Student experience is subject to the wider social and cultural factors that we’ve all been discussing lately – cost-of-living, mental health, social media, digitisation, personalisation – and more. And looking to the future, student experience will be impacted by shifting market dynamics. UCAS predicts that undergraduate applications to UK universities could hit 1 million per year by 2030. That’s a huge increase from the 700-800k applying in recent years. This growth isn’t just happening at undergraduate level: HESA statistics suggest that the postgraduate taught market is growing year-on-year.

With demand for higher education set to boom, there are big questions around whether the system is prepared for this increased demand. Will universities be able to meet expectations? How can they go above and beyond to engage and delight? In light of evolving demands and pressures, how will they attract and retain the very best students?

And how can universities move to the next level and leverage new models to help build and develop student experience?

What can you expect from the event?

Savanta’s exclusive HE Insight Club Event will explore these questions and help higher education professionals develop strategies for the future.

We’ll be using insights from Savanta’s HE Success Suite of subscription products to set the scene for the session, with presentations by Savanta’s Higher Education and Customer Experience teams. We’ll be collaborating to workshop a new approach in understanding student experience.

No discussion about student experience is complete without hearing from students themselves: we’ll be welcoming a fantastic panel of students to openly share their experiences at university – good and bad – and to candidly discuss the impact of their experiences.

This authentic perspective will challenge our assumptions, broaden our understanding, and serve as a reminder of just how far university experiences impact students.

The event will include breakfast, lunch, and hot drinks throughout the day, as well as opportunities for networking.

What will the outcome be?

The valuable input from higher education professionals during the session will contribute to the development of a new insight solution for understanding student experience.

The HE team at Savanta will be building this solution into our 360-degree HE research proposition, and embedding it into our ad hoc research capabilities in order to help universities attract and retain students.

This is just the beginning – we’ll be sharing the outcomes from our HE Insight Club Event and keeping our ad hoc and HE Success Suite subscription clients informed of these exciting developments.
