The public believes that Jeremy Hunt should resign as Culture Secretary by a margin of five to one, according to a ComRes poll for The Independent, the first survey about whether he should quit.

Some 63 per cent of people agree with the statement that Mr Hunt should resign in the light of revelations that his office was secretly passing information to News Corporation during its bid to take over BSkyB.  Only 12 per cent disagree and 24 per cent don’t know.

The poll gives Labour a five-point lead. Labour is on 39 per cent, down one point since the ComRes survey for the Sunday Mirror and Independent on Sunday last weekend; the Conservatives on 34 per cent (unchanged); the Liberal Democrats 10 per cent (down one point) and others 17 per cent (up two points).

By a 2-1 margin, people think the Coalition Government is incompetent. Only 27 per cent agree that it is proving competent, while 56 per cent do not.  By a margin of 67 to 21 per cent, the public believe that David Cameron and George Osborne are out of touch with ordinary people.

According to ComRes, Mr Cameron’s popularity is in line with that of the Conservatives, while Ed Miliband trails his party badly and Nick Clegg is less popular than the Lib Dems. Some 37 per cent of people say they like the Conservatives and 38 per cent Mr Cameron. In contrast,  45 per cent like Labour but only 21 per cent like Mr Miliband. Some 37 per cent like the Lib Dems, while 30 per cent like Mr Clegg.

ComRes interviewed a representative sample of 2,015 GB adults online between April 25-27, 2012.  Data were weighted to be demographically representative of all GB adults and by past vote recall. ComRes is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
