Publishers Association – Digital Publications VAT Survey

Survey of 2,014 GB adults about their use of digital publications and attitudes towards VAT being charged on the purchase of these

  • Half of British adults (52%) have read a paid-for digital publication in the last 12 months
  • Two in five of those who have read any paid-for digital publication in the last 12 months read a paid-for digital publication at least once a day (38%), while two thirds do so at least weekly (64%)
  • The majority of British adults were not aware that VAT is charged at 20% on the purchase of digital publications (68%)
  • British adults are more likely to say that it is unreasonable (56%) for any VAT to be charged on the purchase of digital publications than to say it is reasonable (32%)
  • Almost two thirds of British adults would support the VAT charge on digital publications being reduced to 0% in line with printed publications (63%), with a third saying they would strongly support this (34%). On the other hand, a quarter of British adults would oppose this move (24%)

Methodology

ComRes interviewed 2014 GB adults between 17th and 19th October 2018. Data were weighted to be demographically representative of all GB adults by age, gender, region and social grade. ComRes is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
