Embracing tech-centric roles

Today’s young professionals are pursuing careers deeply embedded in technology. Our research shows that half (51%) of the UK’s Gen Z and Millennial decision-makers hold senior positions in IT/Technology functions, significantly more than the 44% of their Gen X and Baby Boomer counterparts. Moreover, one third (31%) of decision-makers under the age of 45 are employed in the IT, Technology, and Communications sectors, compared to just one in ten (11%) of those 45+.

This inclination towards tech-centric roles is not just a shift in employment trends. As Gen Z and Millennial decision-makers bring their digital-first mindset into the workplace, they are driving innovation and pushing for the adoption of cutting-edge technologies.

Leading the charge in technology adoption

Young decision-makers are not only filling tech roles but are also enthusiastic adopters of various advanced technologies. Our UK Business Tracker highlights the wide range of tech services Gen Z and Millennial decision-makers have already adopted; from social media and digital marketing (70%), cloud solutions (60%) and e-commerce (59%), to fintech solutions (41%). While the trend of adopting individual technologies is similar across organisations led by Gen X and Baby Boomers, the gap is significant.

Gen Z and Millennial business leaders’ proactive approach to technology adoption is not merely about staying current; it’s about leveraging these tools to drive efficiencies, foster innovation, and create competitive advantages.

Staying informed and ahead

Keeping up with industry trends and technological advancements is another area where Gen Z and Millennials stand out. They utilise a broader range of sources, and are more likely to use digital sources such as social media platforms (53%) and webinars (37%) compared to their Gen X and Baby Boomer counterparts (34% and 27% respectively).

This appetite for varied and digital-first sources of information not only keeps Gen Z and Millennial decision-makers well informed, but also positions them as proactive leaders within their organisations.

Embracing the future

Gen Z and Millennial business decision-makers are not just adapting to technological changes; they are pioneers shaping the future of the industry. Their roles, technology adoption habits, and strategic use of digital platforms are transforming business practices and driving forward-thinking initiatives.

For B2B organisations, understanding these insights is crucial. By aligning products and marketing strategies with the preferences of these dynamic leaders, companies can stay ahead of the curve. Moreover, incorporating generational trends into talent acquisition strategies will ensure that businesses attract and retain these innovative minds.
