Survey of GPs on behalf of Clic Sargent about identifying cancer in children

Nearly half of all GPs in the UK rank ‘not enough training available on identifying cancer in children and young people’ as one of the top three barriers in identifying cancer within this group (46%). Over one in five rank this as the number one barrier they face in identifying cancer in children and young people (22%).
A third of all GPs said that insufficient opportunities to gain experience in the care of children and young people during their initial GP training was one of the top three barriers tested in identifying cancer in children and young people (33%). A similar proportion said the same of a lack of awareness of the symptoms (32%).
Almost three in five said discussions with experts, such as paediatric specialists, about specific cases would be beneficial in helping to identify the possible symptoms of cancer in children and young people.

Methodology

ComRes interviewed 1,002 General Practitioners online between the 16^th and 24^th July 2015. Data are representative of all General Practitioners in the UK by former SHA region, with all respondents verified by their GMC number.
