ComRes/ ITV News Poll:  Only one in seven trusts Clegg on economy

The latest ITV News Index, conducted by ComRes and to be broadcast on ITV News at Ten on the second day of the Liberal Democrat Conference, reveals that a mere 15%, or just over one in seven people, trusts Nick Clegg to see the country through the current economic situation compared to 60% who do not. One in four didn’t offer a view.

Mr Clegg might also be disappointed that only one in four (24%) believe that he has proved himself to be a good leader of the Liberal Democrats while a narrow majority, 51%, disagrees. However, Mr Clegg need not be concerned about alternative leaders waiting in the wings, since only 28% of people agree that the Liberal Democrats would be more popular if they replaced Nick Clegg as leader.

The poll also brings a warning for the wider Liberal Democrat Party, with almost 4 in 10 people (39%) thinking that being part of the Coalition will mean the end of the Liberal Democrat party in the long run.

Finally, more than six in ten (61%) believe that the Conservatives have benefited more from the Coalition than the Liberal Democrats have, with just 18% disagreeing. 

The findings of this poll will be broadcast on ITV News at Ten on Monday 19th September.

Methodology: ComRes interviewed 2002 GB adults online between 16th and 18th September 2011.  Data were weighted to be demographically representative of all GB adults.  ComRes is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
