An exclusive opinion poll commissioned for ITV Border’s new political programme Representing Border suggests a big majority of voters in the South of Scotland would currently vote no in the independence referendum.

In what is the first poll to focus solely on the attitudes of voters in the South of Scotland, the poll found less than a quarter, 24%, of South of Scotland voters, intend to vote yes. 59% said they will vote no. The poll was conducted last weekend by ComRes and polled 1,004 adults in the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway council areas.

 

Asked how they would vote in response to the question voters will be asked on September 18th this year, “Should Scotland be an independent country?”, of those who said they were likely to vote:

 

 24% of South of Scotland voters said they'd vote yes

 59% of South of Scotland voters said they'd vote no

 17% said they didn't know how they'd vote

 
However people in the South of Scotland describe themselves as being more Scottish than British.

 

The poll asked people living in the Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway which of the following statements describes them best.

 

21% of them said they are Scottish not British

24% said they are more Scottish than British

35% said they felt equally Scottish and British

7% said they are more British than Scottish

and 12% said they are British not Scottish

Representing Border, presented by Border Television’s Political Editor Peter MacMahon broadcasts for the first time tonight, 7th January, on Freeview in the South of Scotland at 10.35.
