Beyond the menu:

Why eating out brands are fighting for occasions, not customers

Eating out brands aren’t just competing with other restaurants – they’re competing for the moments when people decide how to spend their time. As budgets tighten, the brands that earn a place in those moments will be the ones best placed to hold their ground and own the occasions that matter.

The eating out sector has a competitor problem, but not the one most brands think they have. The real threat isn’t the café that opened down the road or the restaurant chain undercutting on price. It’s every other claim on a person’s time and attention during the moments eating out brands want to own.

And the stakes are rising. According to our Q2 2026 Consumer Compass report, perceived disposable income across the UK has fallen 23 percentage-points since last year, and eating out remains one of the first categories consumers cut when budgets tighten. In that environment, the brands that can justify their place in someone’s week will survive – and that means working harder than ever to own the occasions that matter.

It’s a battle of occasions, not brands

When someone is deciding how to spend a Saturday catch-up or a Tuesday lunch, they aren’t choosing between similar brands – they’re choosing between entirely different experiences. A Pilates class, a walk, and a restaurant are all competing for the same slot. And increasingly, what consumers are really looking for is a third space: somewhere beyond home and work to connect, linger and simply be. The competitive set is far wider than most brands acknowledge, and benchmarking only against direct peers means missing most of the risk.

This is why occasion association matters. Toby Carvery and Ask Italian carry strong ‘catching up with friends’ and ‘family occasion’ associations, reflected in Brand Affinity scores of 69% and 64%, respectively – both above the 62% category norm.

When a brand owns a meaningful occasion, people don’t just visit; they build it into their lives.

Own the moment, not just the menu

When disposable income is squeezed, consumers make choices. They don’t stop eating out – they become more deliberate about which occasions are worth it. The brands that win will be the ones that have earned a place in those moments: the celebrations, the catch-ups, the weekly rituals.

The strategic question has shifted from ‘Who else sells what I sell?’ to ‘Who else owns the moments I want to own?’ And the brands that can answer this question clearly are better placed to hold their ground and grow even as budgets tighten.
