Coronavirus daily tracker: 7th April 2020

Almost a third (31%) of supermarket goers say they haven’t seen any empty shelves – double those who said the same this time last week.

Just one in five (21%) visited a supermarket, our second lowest daily figure ever.

This could be due to fewer supermarket visits: of those that did leave the home, just one in five (21%) visited a supermarket, our second lowest daily figure ever.

It was also announced this morning that Tesco has followed the lead of other supermarkets in reducing restrictions on the number of items customers can buy across most products.

Just one in ten people (11%) visited a shop of a different kind, our lowest figure yet, and just 6% visited friends or family, our joint lowest figure so far.

In terms of outside trips overall, we’ve seen a five point drop in those who have left the house — so the evidence that people are starting to rebel against government guidelines isn’t as compelling as it was a few days ago.

The news that Boris Johnson was yesterday admitted to intensive care after his coronavirus symptoms worsened, will no doubt have shocked and saddened the nation. Worry levels overall had dropped slightly from 56% over the last two days to 53% today but we shall see how such a high profile case will influence the data over the next few days.

In the meantime, amid news of his hospitalisation on Sunday, Boris Johnson’s approval rating– as well as that of the government as a whole – jumped 10 points. All approval ratings for the main government figures and advisers jumped significantly, negating the drop the previous day. The NHS’ approval jumped 4 points to 85%, the highest figure since the end of March.

We will be updating our coronavirus tracker daily and weekly as this unprecedented pandemic unfolds. The full data set can be downloaded here. Please get in touch for more information.
