ComRes interviewed 2,054 British adults on their attitudes to House of Lords Reform.

COMRES/ ITV NEWS POLL: 59% support House of Lords reform to have members elected by public


The latest Index poll results conducted by ComRes and to be broadcast on ITV News at Ten tonight, reveal that as the government proposed to reform House of Lords membership, three in five (59%) agree that in principle they would support reform in order to have the majority of its members elected by the public. 18% disagree and 23% are not sure.

Just a quarter (24%) of the British public believe that House of Lords reform should be a priority for the government at the present time – half of people (50%) disagree.

Asked if the government succeeds in reforming House of Lords membership it should make ALL its members democratically elected, rather than just four-fifths as proposed, more than half agree (53%). One in five disagree (20%) and one in four (26%) don’t know.

Public opinion is divided regarding whether a reduction in the number of MPs in the House of Commons is more important than reforming the House of Lords – 39% agree that it is, while 28% disagree.

Opinion is also divided as to whether people have more respect for the current members of the House of Lords than they do for the current members of the House of Commons – 30% do, while 29% do not.
