COMRES/ ITV NEWS POLL: MAJORITY OF PUBLIC CALL FOR GOVERNMENT FOCUS ON ECONOMIC GROWTH, NOT INFLATION

Today the latest Index poll conducted by ComRes for ITV News at Ten reveals that the majority (65%) of the British public believe that the Government should currently be focusing on promoting economic growth rather than keeping inflation low (25%). One in ten (10%) do not know.

Women are slightly more likely than men to favour keeping inflation low (27% compared with 22% respectively). People in younger age groups are more likely than those in the older age groups to think that the Government should prioritise keeping inflation low: 34% of those aged 18 to 24 say that they should prioritise this, compared to 15% among those aged 65 and over.

The latest results also show that nearly two in five (37%) currently believe that the way the Government is going about cutting public spending is fair. This is the highest recorded score since we asked this question in October 2010, when the figure stood at 40%.

Methodology: ComRes interviewed 2,053 adults online from 14th to 16th December 2012. Data were weighted to be demographically representative of all British adults aged 18+. ComRes is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
