Coronavirus daily tracker: April 28th 2020

With little likelihood of pubs, theatres and cinemas reopening any time soon, is the government doing enough to support the sector?

Following his return to work yesterday after recovering from coronavirus himself, Boris Johnson’s net personal approval rating now stands at 30%.

While the majority of people think that the government is doing enough to support the police (66%), employees (64%) and the NHS (59%), the public seems less sure about how well entertainment venues are being supported amid the coronavirus pandemic. Around a third (32%) of the public don’t think the government is providing enough assistance vs 47% who do.

As may be expected, younger people (age 16-34) —who are most likely to be employed in the leisure industry — don’t think enough support has been given (40% compared with 28% of those aged 35-54 and 30% of the over 55s. Younger people are also least likely to think that employees are being looked after (34%), as well as to have seen their own disposable income decrease (47%) and to say that their job security has got worse (33%).

Around half of people overall think that the government is doing enough to support the self-employed (51%) and airlines (52%). However, with the travel industry one of the most affected, a quarter of people (25%) say they don’t know if the government is supporting airlines sufficiently.

Currently, 60% of the UK public approve of the government’s handling of the pandemic, with just one in ten (10%) saying they strongly disapprove. Following his return to work yesterday after recovering from coronavirus himself, Boris Johnson’s net personal approval rating now stands at 30%, up by three points since the day before. Only Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak currently has a higher net approval rating (44%) of the government ministers tracked.
