We the People – HS2 Poll September 2018

Survey of 2,015 British adults on their views on the planned building of HS2
  • Two thirds of British adults do not think HS2 would benefit them personally at all (67%)
  • Three in five British adults think that HS2 is poor value for money (61%)
  • Four in five British adults think HS2 will end up costing more than its projected cost of £56 billion (79%)
  • More British adults oppose the construction of HS2 than support it (38% vs 35% respectively)
  • A high majority of British adults would rather the government spent its planned £99 billion on improving the capacity of existing railways instead of building HS2 (85% vs 15%)
  • The highest priority for British adults in terms of government spending on infrastructure are most likely to be repair and maintenance of roads (not motorways) (22%), closely followed by the building of HS2 (21%)

Methodology

Survey of 2,015 British adults online between 7th and 9th September 2018. Data were weighted to be demographically representative by age, gender and region. ComRes is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
