A survey on public attitudes around disability support, change over time and the Government’s National Disability Strategy plans.
- Whilst 22% of the general public classify as disabled according to the Equality Act definition, half (51%) of this category do not consider themselves to be disabled.
- There is an expectation that publication of a National Disability Strategy should remain a priority to support the Prime Minister’s levelling up agenda once coronavirus lockdown restrictions have been eased. Two thirds (68%) of the public agree with this – rising too three quarters (76%) among disabled people specifically.
- Workplace opportunities are considered greatest enabler for disabled people being able to live their lives fully as they want to. A majority of the public (63%) and disabled people (67%) rank ‘equal opportunities at work to develop their skills and career on the basis of talent’ as one the top three perceived enablers of this.
