Disability Commission Public Polling May 2020

A survey on public attitudes around disability support, change over time and the Government’s National Disability Strategy plans.

Whilst 22% of the general public classify as disabled according to the Equality Act definition, half (51%) of this category do not consider themselves to be disabled.
There is an expectation that publication of a National Disability Strategy should remain a priority to support the Prime Minister’s levelling up agenda once coronavirus lockdown restrictions have been eased. Two thirds (68%) of the public agree with this – rising too three quarters (76%) among disabled people specifically.
Workplace opportunities are considered greatest enabler for disabled people being able to live their lives fully as they want to. A majority of the public (63%) and disabled people (67%) rank ‘equal opportunities at work to develop their skills and career on the basis of talent’ as one the top three perceived enablers of this.

Methodology

Savanta ComRes interviewed 2,101 UK adults aged 18+ online from the 24th to 27th April 2020. Data were weighted to be demographically representative of UK adults by age, gender, region and social grade.
