CNN Race Relations Poll

A survey of GB adults, including a boost of BAME respondents, to examine perceptions and experiences of race relations in Britain.

POLICING

  • Black people are twice as likely as white people to say they have NOT been treated with respect by police
  • Black people are twice as likely as white people to say a friend or family member has NOT been treated with respect by police
  • Black people are twice as likely as white people to say UK police are institutionally racist – but even among white people, just over a quarter of people believe it: 27% of white people, 54% of black people.

 

RACE RELATIONS

  • Black people are three times as likely  as white people to say the UK has “not done anywhere near enough” to address historical racial injustice. That said, one out of three white people say the UK has NOT done enough.
  • Majorities in every group say race relations are better in the UK than in the US, but white people are much more likely to believe it than black people.

 

MEDIA AND CULTURE

  • Black people are more than twice as likely to say they are offended by statues of people involved in the slave trade or colonization.
  • Black people are more than twice as likely as white people to support the removal of those statues by protesters.
  • Black people are nearly twice as likely as white people to support the removal of those statues by authorities.
  • Black people are three times more likely to say black celebrities are treated worse by the media than white celebs.

 

EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITY

  • Black people are almost three times more likely than white people to say far too little is taught in schools about racial injustice.
  • BAME people are more than twice as likely as white people to say BAME people have less opportunity than white people to succeed professionally in the UK
  • BAME people are about twice as likely as white people to say employers are doing too little to recruit and promote BAME employees

 

POLITICS

  • A small majority of white people trust the UK government that something like the Windrush scandal would not happen again, while an identical small majority of black people do NOT trust the UK government. White people say 55% to 39% that they DO trust the government. Black people say 55% to 38% that they do NOT.
  • Black people are significantly more likely than white people to say the Conservative Party is institutionally racist, although a significant minority of white people say it is.
  • Roughly a third of each group says the Labour Party is institutionally racist.
  • Nearly half of white people (45%) and just over half of black people (55%) say the Brexit Party is institutionally racist.

Methodology

Savanta ComRes interviewed 1,535 GB adults aged 18+ online between 12 and 14 June 2020. The sample included a nationally representative sample of 1,000, and with a boost to guarantee 500 BAME respondents overall. Data were weighted to be nationally representative of all GB adults by age, sex, region and ethnicity. Savanta ComRes is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
