Description

STRATFORD-ON-AVON RESIDENTS WANT NEW HOUSES CONCENTRATED AROUND TOWNS

70% of Stratford-on-Avon residents agree that a large proportion of new houses should be built as extensions to large towns (where there are existing schools and facilities) rather than spread across the entire district, according to a new ComRes survey.

The survey also found that increasing housing availability, particularly for the young, is one of the most important issues for local residents. Local people overwhelmingly agree that “there is a need for new low cost housing for first time buyers and young families in the district” (87%), while just 35% of residents say that they are satisfied with housing for young people and young families in the area – less than for any of the other services tested.

Residents consider addressing this shortage to be one of the most important priorities for Stratford. Indeed of the issues tested, “increasing housing for young people and young families” was the second most likely to be rated as “a high priority” in the district council area (49%) behind only increasing the availability of jobs (54%). Surprisingly, older residents are even more likely than their younger neighbours to see housing for young people as a high priority.

The survey also indicates that new housing development in the Stratford-on-Avon district will have to take existing local infrastructure into account. While local people are largely satisfied (87%) with existing levels of public services in the district, an overwhelming majority (93%) agree that if new houses are built, there would also need to be improvements in local infrastructure.

ComRes interviewed 1,029 adults in Stratford-on-Avon District Council area by telephone between 16th and 22nd March 2012 on behalf of Bloor Homes. Data were weighted to be demographically representative of Stratford-on-Avon adults by age group, gender and region. ComRes is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
