Teach First survey of undergraduates

Poll of 1,002 undergraduate students in the UK regarding their process of university application.

  • One fifth of undergraduate students (21%) report they have always known they would definitely apply to university.
  • Undergraduate students of social grade A (48%) or B (45%) are more likely to report they decided to apply before their GCSEs than students of social grade C1 (34%) or C2/DE (30%).
  • Four in five undergraduate students (81%) report that their family and friends expected them to apply for university; one in five (19%) report it was a surprise to their family and friends that they applied.
  • Reputation of the university is the factor undergraduates are most likely to say influenced the choice of universities they applied for; 71% report this influenced them.

ComRes interviewed 1,002 undergraduate students attending university in the UK between 10 and 16 May 2016. Data were weighted by age, gender, and university group.
