IHPN – Polling on patient choice

Survey of adults in England on patient choice in accessing healthcare

• The majority of English adults (53%) said they knew that there was a legal right to choose a hospital or clinic for a first NHS outpatient appointment
• The majority of English adults (56%) said they didn’t know that the NHS pays for travel and accommodation for people who are accessing NHS treatment outside their local area
• Clear majorities agree they should have a right to choose where they receive their NHS treatment, including with an independent/private sector provider (75%) and that they are happy to receive NHS care with an independent/private sector provider as long as they are subject to the same quality standards as the NHS and it costs the standard NHS price (87%)

Methodology

Savanta ComRes interviewed 2,266 adults aged 18+ in England online between 20th and 22nd May 2022. Data were weighted to be representative of England adults by age, gender, region and social grade.
